![]() ![]() We also applied the model to three study regions in Germany, each representing slightly different climatic conditions and containing significantly different pattern of suitable habitats for the mosquito species. Both species are widely distributed in Germany and discussed as important hosts and vectors, respectively. ![]() We applied the space–time coupled model with a daily temporal and spatial resolution of 100 m 100 m to the Eurasian magpie (Pica pica) and the Asian bush mosquito (Aedes japonicus japonicus). It demonstrates how the female mosquitoes move within the landscape due to habitat structures and wind conditions and about how many of them leave the region in the different cardinal directions. We further extended it by a spatial component: an agent-based flight simulator for vector mosquitoes. For this purpose, we adapted a SEIR model for West Nile virus to the conditions in Germany (temperatures, geographical latitude, bird and mosquito species densities) and the characteristic transmission and life trait parameter of a possible host bird and vector mosquito species. The aim of the work presented here was to provide a tool for estimating West Nile virus infection scenarios, local hotspots and dispersal routes following its introduction into new locations through the movements of mosquitoes. On Gran Canaria, mosquitoes were captured using Centers for Disease Con. In 2018, the virus was detected for the first time in Germany, and incidents have been reported in humans, birds, and horses. doi: 10.1186/s1307-6 PubMed Central PMCID: PMC5009705.Compartmental SIR and SEIR models have become the state of the art tools to study infection cycles of arthropod-borne viruses such as West Nile virus in specific areas. La saliva desencadena una reacción leve del sistema inmunitario que produce el clásico picor y bulto. A medida que el mosquito que pica se llena de sangre, inyecta saliva en la piel. West Nile virus: a primer for the clinician. Las hembras de mosquito son las que pican, ya que son las que se alimentan de la sangre. West Nile virus: A re-emerging pathogen revisited. Our observations shed light on the pathogenesis, transmission, and ecology of WNV and can benefit the implementation of surveillance and control programs. These results suggest that the magpie, which is one of the most abundant corvid species in Europe, could represent a source of WNV transmission for birds and humans. Sham-infected control animals were negative for viremia, viral RNA, and antibodies. Even more, infectious virus was recovered from swabs up to 7 days post-infection and from feather pulps up to 10 days post infection. ![]() WNV-RNA was amplified from swabs (oral and cloacal) at 3, 6 and 7 days post-infection and feather pulps, from 3 to 17 days post-infection, of infected animals. WNV genome was detected in the brains and hearts of all magpies that succumbed to the infection, and, in some of the surviving birds. Neutralizing antibodies were detected at all time points analyzed (from 7 to 17 days post-infection). All infected magpies developed viremia detectable at 3 days post-infection with titers above those necessary for successful transmission of WNV to a mosquito. Magpies were highly susceptible to WNV infection, with similar low survival rates (30% and 42.8%) for both lineages. Herein, we report the first experimental infection of magpie (Pica pica) with two strains of West Nile virus, lineages 1 (NY-99) and 2 (SRB Novi-Sad/12), which are currently circulating in Europe. Resident birds play an important role in flavivirus epidemiology, since they can serve as reservoirs and facilitate overwintering of the virus. Una cámara ha captado en ultra alta definición el procedimiento, con imágenes internas que muestran la absorción desde el interior de los vasos. West Nile virus (WNV), a zoonotic pathogen naturally transmitted by mosquitoes whose natural hosts are birds, has spread worldwide during the last few decades.
